Although the flights to madeira take at least 20 hours from utah, this small island is a true gem. Located just west of morocco, it is occupied by portugal. it is possible to circle the island by car in just a few hours. the roads are narrow and steep with tunnels and viewpoints everywhere. most of the population knows some english, and it is very safe and quiet. there is frequent rain, but that also means wildflowers and rainbows. there are many great hikes with great vistas, making the island a paradise for photographers.
For the first 3 days we stayed at the Madeira Dreams Resort and photographed the long narrow southeast peninsula, and surrounding areas.
Next we visited Sao Vicente and the north and west sides of the island, as well as the fanal forest.
Next we stayed on the southern coast, and visited the overlooks of Bica da Cana and Pico do Areeiro
